no more prayers

I learned early

from my father

that alcohol makes a poor crutch

from the Catholic Church that

St Luke or any other saint

would not hold me up either

every day the world

teaches me that God does not exist

outside of another person’s imagination

or some religious doctrine

I’ve discerned as much from

superstition

old wives’ tales and waking dreams

as I have from attending mass

I’ve seen that looking for signs

I won’t recognize one

it’s better to learn from coincidence

than having faith

in some apparition

the ghost of someone else's belief

so where does that all leave me

today

when saying a prayer

can’t possibly relieve the pain I feel

for this society we live in

where our way of life

mocks us as a way of death

where more guns means less safety

more carnage

less courage

to do what needs to be done

when our tears will not wash away

the blood we shed in fear or anger

our prayers will not bring back the dead

where does that leave us all

primum non nocere

sometime
we fall short
of being better people
when we won’t
recognize a symptom
a sorrow
a struggle

our pride fights back
when we should
come to the table
to surrender
disarm our demons
and be still

even though pain
tortures our conscience
tears at our heart

our incomprehension
pushes us toward
escalation
and deeper wounds

making more scars
when we could begin
to help

to heal…

souls in common

across the sky
the years
the miles
of a great divide
without saying
but knowing
perceiving  the bond
that just a few will see

across a country
a continent
an ocean
souls searching
without touch
embrace
or whisper

still a closeness
across the silence
the darkness
the shadows
unknown

similar dreams
light up a speck of universe
a candle flicker
a mirror image
one kindred spirit
or two in a life
finding some shared ground
symphonic similarities
songs sung in unison
answers to questions
no one asked

more déjà vu than coincidence
or memory
a waking dream
across the rippled expanse of wonder
the echo of a thought unspoken
the reflection of a rainbow unseen

unfathomable to all
but souls in common

mad cow*

sometimes
I keep my keys
in cold storage
next to the milk
and juice

hardly imagining
that the battery will
last longer
at 40 degrees

it is harder
to remember them
there
though I always know
where they are
when I look for something
to drink

eventually
it won’t matter
where my keys are
after the first time I go
to the store

and don’t come back
on my own…

a circle broken

since the banishment
possibilities appear
as anguish
not as opportunities

the shunning
the stark sudden turning
away
diminishes the world
obscuring  old joys

a small thing like
averting a glance
making no mention but
at least no longer looking
for blame or absolution
or reason

a philosophical escape
from anger and pain
a looking forward beyond the void
brings an incomplete rescue
leaves a hangover of hurt

the new normal
a fractured soul, a bent back
carrying the stones, the weight
of scorn
real and imagined

the added burden of disbelief

there is no silver lining...

terror

maybe
our lives are just
too predictable
to appreciate
 a world where someone
would strap explosives
around their waists
to kill people so randomly

we’re told
that if we change our routines
then
they have won
how simplistically we believe
and go about our business

feeling powerless to do more
than make a fleeting offering
of thoughts and prayers
flag lightshows on our landmarks
candlelight vigils
bouquets, poems and tears on sidewalks

maybe
going about our daily lives
is just what they want because
then
they know
we will be too busy
too occupied

to stop them…

pareidolia

the face of Christ on a piece of toast
some plaster in Pittsburgh
a pancake at the Cowgirl Cafe
on the Shroud of Turin
looking as much like Charles Manson
or Che Guevara
as Jesus

Mother Mary appearing
 between hospital window panes
near Boston
or a on a tree trunk
in Iowa

 religious Rorschachs
only perceived by some
ridiculed by others
with a clearer vision
or none at all

camera ready
a few search for a sign
look for hope
in a bowl of corn flakes

most laugh at the phenomenon
this prophecy
 whose medium might be mold,
misty moisture or
burned bread

but others
not blinded
by impossibility
might see a miracle
dancing in their heads
